Elaine belongs to me. Erik/The Phantom belongs to The Phantom of the Opera which is the property of Andrew Lloyd Webber. God Help the Outcasts belongs to Disney. Italic represents Elaine's singing, underline presents chorus.

Also, this is the melody to the version sung in the movie with some lyrics from the version sang by Bette Midler.

A little backstory about this oneshot: this would take place after 'Il Muto' and before the Masquerade party. Elaine went to the Notre Dame cathedral to sing about Erik and other misfits who had been treated poorly by people.

After the events of 'Il Muto', wrapped in a cloak, Elaine Turner finds herself heading to the Notre Dame cathedral.

It had been a tradition for her to visit Notre Dame after every show at the Opera Populaire since she arrived. She did not know this time she was being followed by a certain Phantom, still heartbroken from Christine's betrayal but wanting to know more about the young woman she is friends with.

Elaine came to the door. The Archdeacon let her in, knowing well why she's here.

Placing her hood down, she arrived to the statue of Mary with baby Jesus in her arms. Because she was raised with religion, she made a cross sign before starting her usual prayer.

I don't know if you can hear me

or if you're even there

I don't know if you would listen

to a humble prayer

They tell me I'm just an outcast

I shouldn't speak to you

still I see your face and wonder

were you once an outcast too

From a safe distance, the Phantom to the world, Erik always to Elaine, watched her, his eyes widening in realization when he heard the tune. It reminded him of a childhood best friend that he knew who always felt compassion for the less-fortunate.

God, help the outcasts

hungry from birth

Show them the mercy

they don't find on earth

The lost and forgotten

they look to you still

God, help the outcasts

or nobody will

As she walked around the cathedral, she can hear the congregation singing their petty prayers.

I ask for wealth

I ask for fame

I ask for glory to shine on my name

I ask for love

I can possess

I ask for God and his angels

to bless me

I ask for nothing

I can get by

but I know so many

less lucky than I

You made the outcasts

don't cast them out

The poor and the unlucky

the weak and the odd

I thought we all were

the children of God.

Her prayer having been sung, Elaine made the cross sign again as if to say 'amen'.

Erik smiled softly, his heartbreak from Christine temporarily forgotten. He remembered her voice soothing him during his time with the gypsies. Then he quietly left the cathedral, knowing well at some point, Elaine would return to the Populaire. However he wants to catch up with her before she rests for the next day.

I might consider doing a Phantom of the Opera story featuring Elaine and her involvement, but in the meantime, enjoy this oneshot.
