"Ouch!" Evin's head popped up from behind the pile of feed stacked by the stables.

"Shut UP, Evin, you're going to blow our hiding spot," Dom hissed from behind another pile of grain sacks. "You suckered me into helping you 'train' your Riders, in Sergeant Justice's full uniform, so we're doing this right!"

Evin held up his hand, which was rapidly swelling. "It bit me!"

He thrust it under Dom's nose, and Dom couldn't help but commiserate; that bite looked nasty and was rapidly discoloring the skin around it; his whole hand was an angry red.

"Do you think that spiders can be rabid?" Evin asked, curiously poking his hand and hissing at the pressure.

"I'm not Daine, why don't you ask her?"

"Alright, let's go!" Evin dragged Dom out of hiding with his good hand, and they set off for the mage's wing. "Maybe, if I'm lucky, it'll give me some kind of weird spider abilities, like climbing up walls, or spinning webs out of this hand, or-"

"—having eight eyes, or sprouting another six legs?"

"Eeeww, Dom, why do you have to ruin everything?" Evin complained as he knocked on the door to Daine's workroom.

When she answered, poking her head out into the hall, she blinked.

"What are you wearin—what can I do for you two?"

Evin thrust his hand towards her. "Can spiders be rabid?"

His hand, which was by now about twice its normal size and blotchy red-white, clearly disgusted her.

"Er, why are you here? You should be in the infirmary getting that looked at!" she scolded him. "And I don't think they can be, but I've never run into one that was sick before."

"Oh, alright," Dom said nonchalantly, as if there was nothing wrong with Evin and his balloon hand. "We were just wondering."

Duke Baird, when they finally arrived at the infirmary, only shook his head and went looking for the bandages.
