Izuru Kira, a seventeen year old, Japanese boy, was always known as the marigold on precipice. Why, you ask? It all started when he was fourteen, before the first day of high school. It was late September, the next day was Izuru's first day of high school, and he couldn't wait.

Izuru's parents were always proud of Izuru, no matter what; that always made him a happy, strong, young man. On that afternoon, Izuru's parents went to run some errands, on their way back they got into a car accident; somebody crashed into them. When an ambulance arrived, it was too late; Izuru's mother and father had already lost too much blood.

The police called up Izuru, and his grandparents drove him to the scene. Izuru ran up to his parents, "Mother, father, don't die on me, I can't lose you now!" Tears began to fill his eyes, and then all of a sudden, mustering all of the strength they had left, Izuru's mother and father spoke, "My son, be strong, do not shed tears for us. In your heart you must know that when we pass away; we will still be proud of you. Now, grant us a final wish, always be strong, no matter what life throws at you and when you die, die with a smile on your face, for only then we know we can rest in peace."

Suddenly both parents went cold and limp; they had died. Izuru's grandparents offered to take him in, but he declined he promised his parents he'll be strong. Izuru lived all alone and only his two best friends knew about his family's past; a girl named Momo Hinamori, and a guy named Shuuhei Hisagi. Both former and latter haven't seen him smile since then, and they both agreed to call him a marigold on precipice.

Now why a marigold, and why and precipice, you wonder? When Izuru's parents died, their blood was splattered on marigolds, so Izuru said the marigold was his flower of despair. They said he was a marigold on precipice, because on a precipice, flowers hardly grew, not enough water got to them to give them nutrition. Izuru was that one, lonely, strong, flower, trying hard to pull through. The name fitted him well and Izuru never minded it. The day the "marigold" wilted away, he managed to go with a smile on his face, knowing that he will reunite with his beloved parents, once again.
