Some Flames
"Close your eyes and put your hands out." Max told her as he jumped up on her from behind.
"Max, I've got to get back inside." Zoe told him as they both stood outside the ED. It was Valentines Day, their first together as an official couple. Both had had to work the day shift and had consequently decided that they'd go out for dinner and that would be the extent of their celebration. Max leant down and kissed Zoe gently, neither caring about the people observing them.
"A few more minutes won't hurt, now close your eyes and put your hands out." Max insisted.
"I thought we weren't doing gifts." Zoe reminded him, as she felt an object now in her hands and opened her eyes again. "And we're not." She laughed, only Max would go out of his way to find Love Heart sweets, it was an incredibly sweet gesture that she didn't know how to react to. Taking his hand she pulled him into the alleyway close to the hospital.
"Thought you had to get back."
"Ah well there's been a change of plan." Zoe whispered as Max held her against the wall with his weight as he kissed her, immediately they were taken back to the last time they'd stood there kissing, the time they officially got together.
The ED was anything but quiet in the last couple of hours of 2014. Already they'd had people who couldn't handle the amount of alcohol they had consumed, people who had fallen over (a great deal of which went hand in hand with the alcohol), and young adults who had had a bad reaction to drugs and legal highs.
"If there's no emergencies in then we're doing a countdown to the new year in reception." Charlie told the rest of the team, most of whom were gathered around the nursing station.
"How long until the countdown?" Rita asked as the watch on his wrist seemed to have stopped half way through the shift.
"5 minutes." Lily spoke from the crowd of doctors and nurses.
"I'll go and tell the others."
The staff and the patients who could get out of bed, whether it be standing or in a wheelchair, were gathered in the reception area to see in the new year. The tv was turned on and getting ready to countdown until midnight. The ED was quiet while they waited until the countdown started, when everyone began chanting.
"10...9...8...7...6...5...4...3...2...1. Happy new year!" Everyone shouted. Several staff members were giving each other hugs or kisses on the cheek, however Max and Zoe had seen in the new year as they'd been locked in a kiss at the back of the crowd.
"Come with me." Max whispered taking her hand and leading her out to an alleyway near the hospital where they couldn't be seen. "Happy new year Zo. Sorry about kissing you."
"Maybe it's just as well you did. Maybe some flames just aren't meant to go out." Zoe replied quietly before she leaned forward and pressed her lips to Max's. "Happy new year."
