Oh I am what I am
I'll do what I want,
But I can't hide

-Dido, Here with me

Caroline hated being the new girl in town, despised it. She was used to being the popular one that everyone gave attention to, cheerleader, student council and other committees, Caroline was not used to being invisible.

But in this goddamn school in Wyoming, she was invisible. It's hard to stand out in a school where everyone looked like movie stars and to top it off they didn't even have a cheerleading team.

She moaned about her Status: Unpopular for weeks and things got worse when the resident Queen Bitch started picking on her because her boyfriend had an unexpected interest in Caroline.

It wasn't her fault Christian liked her. She even reveled in it a bit because he was good-looking, nice and overall perfect…though birds tended to follow him around and that was weird.

She was choking. The smoke was in her lungs and everything's on fire. There was no way out and she was crouched on the ground feeling helpless as the flames came closer.

Somebody…somebody help her…please?

Oxygen wouldn't enter her lungs and she started to feel lightheaded so much until her thoughts spiraled into darkness.

The last thing she saw was white, ivory wings.

She woke up in a hospital the next day, strapped down in a hospital bed. The doctors said she was there for smoke inhalation and some minor burns. They called her lucky for somehow getting out of the forest in time. But the thing was, she didn't remember escaping, she remembered collapsing there about to die.

Someone or something had saved her.

She remembered those wings and wondered.

Christian came to visit her on the day she was supposed to be discharged. Her dad was late in picking her up and she stayed in the lobby impatiently when he came in and smiled at her warmly.

"How are you, Caroline?" He asked and she found herself reaching for him like magnets being pulled together. She took a step back.

"I'm fine," She replied. "What are you doing here?"

"I came to see how you were. Are you going home?"

"Yeah," She nodded. "My dad's late though."

He took this all in and looked pensive for a moment before changing his mind. "I'll see you around then."

Christian was hiding something from her. She was sure of it.

So like any curiosity-driven heroine, she investigated and stalked him until she found out the truth.

He stood there with the sun at his back, large white ivory wings spread out as he stared at her. He started to glow and she felt fear bloom in her chest along with the feelings of shock and realization.

"What are you?"

"I'm an angel."

That was that.

"Why did you save me?" She asked. "That fire in the forest? Why?"

He just smiled. "I was always meant to save you, Caroline."
