I turned the page of my Science textbook, trying to concentrate. All the screaming and yelling by the other kids outside for lunch was distracting me. I was having a Science test right after and I wanted to study a bit more before the test. I was about to turn the page until-

"Hello, Dawn." I nearly screamed. How was I supposed to concentrate when everyone was talking to me?

I looked up angrily "What do you want?" I snapped. I was even more annoyed when I realized it was Alan Gray the Pest. "I'm studying. Leave me alone."

"What? I just wanted to play Find the Truth." He sat next to me "Well?"

"No." I went back to my textbook

"Oh come on." He grabbed my textbook and playfully held it over my head

"Give it back, Alan." I dove for it but he jerked his hand quickly. I tried again but he was too fast for me. I gave in "Fine. Go ahead."

"I knew you'd come around. Okay, which one is the truth," he thought about it for a while "I think that school is fun, everyone I know has a sister/brother, or my name is Alan." I stared at him. My name is Alan? What kind of question was that?

"The truth is, your name is Alan."

"Wrong! My name is actually Anderson but I hate that name. The truth is that I think school is fun" I cocked my head to the side.

"I didn't know your name was Anderson."

"No one did," He smiled at me "well, you do now." I blushed and looked to the ground.

"Well uh… next question, please…" I mumbled

He became red in the face as well "Er… yeah… which is the truth? I have four brothers and a sister, I live in a mansion, or I have type 2 diabetes."

This was a hard one "Um, you live in a mansion?"

"Nope. I have four older brothers."

"What? I thought you were an only child…but now that I think about it, you never talk about your family." I was learning so many new things about Alan today.

"No one really cares," he said sadly "everyone just thinks I'm a pest." I was beginning to feel guilty "it's not easy being the youngest in a family of seven. No one has time for me. I guess I strive for attention." He shrugged

"Oh Alan, I'm sorry."

"Whatever. Last question," he checked his watch "we have six minutes till our next class. Ready?" I nodded "I skipped kindergarten…"he was trying to think of more "Uh… lunch is going to end in an hour or I think…or I think you're really pretty and nice."

"Well—"I stopped myself when I realized what he had just said "Alan?" he was blushing profusely "You think I'm really pretty and nice?"

"The only one you've gotten right today." He smiled and I smiled back

"Time to go to your next class!" a teacher shouted as kids began to run back to the school

"We have to go." He was still smiling at me

"I know." I looked around to make sure no one was looking. Then I kissed Alan on the cheek. "You're sweet, Alan." His eyes widened and he stared at me "See you in class." I said softly and I waved goodbye. As I left I could hear Alan shouting: "Yes!"

I giggled and touched my lips with my fingers, what had caused me to kiss him? Whatever it was, that kiss had put a smile on my face. Alan was sweet. He was a human being with feelings. I promised myself that I would never tell anyone what Alan had said. It was personal and Alan just like anyone else deserved some privacy. Even if he was a pest.
