Help Me Lose My Mind
Connie looked around, her department seemed to be in chaos. She'd lost yet another patient, and combined with the exhaustion she felt she was becoming ever more emotional with every passing second. Closing herself in her office, she finally allowed the tears, that she'd been fighting, to fall. They left black stains down her perfect skin but the emotional stain was far worse.
"Connie?" Came a recognisable voice, a voice she took slight comfort from, from the other side of the door. She never replied. Never told him to come in, never corrected him or scolded him on the use of her first name. Instead she remained silent, barely even acknowledging his presence as he opened the door and stood beside where she was sat, on her desk.
"There was nothing else you could have done." He told her, hoping that it might ease the pain that was so evident by just looking at her. She looked up at him slightly and offered him a slight smile, all she could muster the energy for. In a move that surprised her and even himself, he moved his hand to her cheek and gently wiped away the tears that he found there. "There, that's better." He whispered in her ear, tucked a stray piece of hair behind her ear and then took a step back, aware that he was clearly crossing a line.
"Cal, make me feel normal again." She sobbed, standing up but uneasy on her feet due to the emotion running through her. Her brain had stopped working, or thinking logically and that was her only defence for why she was kissing a junior doctor who wasn't far off half of her age. Cal pulled back, unwilling to take advantage of his vulnerable boss, however much he was sure he was in love with her.
"Are you sure?" Cal asked gently, leaving her to think for several seconds before she nodded. She was back in his arms and kissing him.
The sun poured through the young doctors flat and awoke the sleeping clinical lead. Her eyes took several moments to adjust to the light, in which time she had noticed that this was not her usual surroundings, for a minute she panicked before she remembered odd bits of the previous night. The bed next to her was empty but there was the unmistakable sound of a shower coming from the next room.
"Morning babe." Cal greeted her, walking back over to the bed in just a towel and kissing her. Connie just smiled, she had harboured a secret crush for the young doctor since she'd joined the ED team at Holby. He managed to numb the pain she felt internally and that was something that she desperately craved. "There's a clean towel in the bathroom if you wanted a shower, I'm making breakfast first if you want some."
"Is Ethan in?" Connie asked, remembering that the brothers shared a flat.
"Yeah, he's reading I think." Cal told her, seeing her face fall. "He's not a gossip Con. We can't hide from him, especially if you staying is going to be a regular thing like I hope it is."
"I don't know Caleb." Connie replied, unsure of what she was going to do. She took herself off to the shower, giving herself time to think. Cal was a ladies man, he wouldn't have mentioned staying regularly if he didn't think it could be serious, that scared her.
"I'm sorry for pushing you Con." Cal apologised with breakfast in bed laid out for her as she came out of the bathroom in one of Cal's oversized shirts and a towel covering her wet hair.
"It's fine, lets just see where this goes though hey?" She replied, offering him a smile and then a gentle kiss as he nodded.
"I can agree to that."
