"Would you do it? Would you do this? Think about it Doctor. One last day with your beloved, which day would you choose?"
His memory betrays him. Just for a moment when he closes his eyes, he allows himself the small indulgence as to remember her smile.
"Christmas"
Which is mostly a lie. He could have picked Christmas but it would never have been his choice. He knows his answer because he has thought about it for so very long now. He would choose no day at all. A day that he has lost track of, full of moments that were unimportant at the time except for the fact that they were there. He has no desire to live through his happiest memories with her; they are perfect just as they are. Preserved in the ice of his mind. Awakened every now and then to be with him, his Abigail - his Rose.
After it is over he visits Kazran. She is gone and once again the Doctor cannot help but feel partially responsible. But Kazran did better than he ever did, he didn't make the same mistakes. The Doctor puts his hand on the old man's shoulder. Kazran doesn't turn around. He sits in his chair looking at his photographs, sad but grateful. The Doctor knows that this is the way it should be.
"Doctor, I wonder if it is possible that all this could have happened in one night."
The Doctor smiles "Many things happen in one night Kazran, in fact I've saved the world several times in one evening, but no, not this, this did not happen all in one night. I would never presume to take credit for Abigail's place in your heart. That was something that happened both all at once and over many years."
Kazran still does not turn to look at him. Instead he continues looking through the photographs as the Doctor slips away. He calls out to him just as he is leaving. "Thank you Doctor."
The Doctor nods his head in his direction but continues on. This is one of the men he cannot bear to accept thanks from. Not right now at least.
He re-enters the Tardis abound with new energy, pushing her from his mind once again. Suggests five new planets at once but in the end picks one completely at random. "The further the better!" he says. Rory laughs and asks him he can choose. The Doctor looks at him and once again his memory, caught off guard, grabs him. "I made my choice a long time ago I'm never gonna leave you!"
"Simple Rory! I don't!"
He changes course and chooses a different planet. But five and five thousand years away he sees her point to a star. With snow on her hair her hand in his. She made his choice along time ago.
"Choices! Ha! Never liked them never needed them always ignore them pick whatever looks interesting today and then pick the one to the left. Left is right I always say. Well I don't but I will now! There that's another set of choices made already. Left always go left Rory!"
But Rory had stopped listening talking in whispers to Amy who was smiling brightly back at him. The Doctor pulled a lever on the console and veered off to the left. Then said much quieter and mostly to himself and maybe the Tardis.
"Choices. Ha."
