This is going to be a fic based on the alternate opening to the Avengers. If you haven't seen it, you should check it out. If it's Marvel, I don't own it.

PROLOGUE:

SHIELD Headquarters

Interrogation Room B

Present

She sat at the foot of the table, tapping her well-manicured fingernails nervously against the black lacquer as she waited for someone to come in.

She thought back to the last time she had sat here, nearly ten years ago, after she'd first applied for this job. Even now, she was just as nervous as she had been then, if not more. Now, now she knew that if someone wanted her to not leave this room, the people standing outside and, undoubtedly, around the edges of this very room, would have no problems ensuring that she... disappeared. Forever.

She glanced up as the heavy door swung open, admitting eight people into the expansive interrogation room, seven men and one woman. Wordlessly, seven of the group, including the woman, all dressed in matching black suits with black ties over a white collared shirt, starched, obviously, sat in a semi-circle at the head of the table as the other man came to a rest in front of the door, assault rifle crossed his chest in a defensive position.

The man at the center of the semi-circle at the other end of the table scribbled something in his notepad, a black leather padfolio, then looked up at her silently, signaling her to begin.

She took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts and determining how to begin.

"You want to know what went wrong?" she started. "How this horror, this catastrophe, could have been averted?"

The man cocked his head. "A lot of people are dead, Agent Hill. Someone has to answer for that."

"A lot of people have to answer for that," she replied.

"Fury?"

She let out a soft whisper. "That man..."

This time the woman spoke. "You've filed several reports criticizing Director Fury's actions since you joined SHIELD."

"Because he's reckless!" she exclaimed. "We're at war, and he thinks about superheroes!"

"The Avengers?"

She let out a soft groan, resisting the urge to roll her eyes. "God... Who would bring those people together and not expect what happened?"
