A distant howling could be heard through Willa's open window. Unpacked boxes lay on the empty floor around her. A breeze blew in making her shiver. She walked over to the window and closed it. Willa glanced outside and noticed the full moon. It was practically glowing in the dark, night sky.
Chapter One: The New Girl
The next morning, Willa awoke extremely exhausted. She hadn't had much sleep due to the terrifying fact that she had to start at a new school today. Her dad had just gotten a new job halfway across the state, which meant that Willa had to leave her old friends and school to live here. Here being a small town in California called Beacon Hills.
Willa was seventeen years old and was in eleventh grade. At her old school, she had been in mostly advanced classes and had a knack for music, mostly singing. She had even written a few of her own songs. She also had had a great group of friends. Willa was used to leaving though. This wasn't the first time she had to leave a life behind. She usually forced herself to not get too attached. Unfortunately for her, she sort of forgot to follow that rule this time. Now, as she sat on her bed, ready to start another new life, she couldn't help but worry about how this day would play out.
Eventually, fighting the urge to stay put, Willa headed out. She hopped into the driver's side of her dad's car, she didn't have her own, and waved to him through the passenger-side window. Her dad pulled a tissue out of his pocket and proceeded to wipe invisible tears from his eyes. Willa rolled her eyes, honked the horn, and then took off down her new street to her brand new school. She just hoped she wouldn't screw this day up.
Willa must have arrived to the school early because when she got there, she only saw a few kids. Many of them were walking together in small groups. A lot of the guys were carrying lacrosse sticks and had a girl on their arm. Willa couldn't help but feel jealous of those girls. They knew where they belonged. They didn't have to go through the trouble of searching.
Once Willa had parked the car, she hopped out and began walking towards the school. She passed the huge Beacon Hills High School sign and sat down at a table. She took out her notebook and began working on her latest song. It was about a new girl, which was kind of fitting. About fifteen minutes later, the front lawn of the school was filled with students. A bell sounded, signaling the start of the school day, and Willa quickly gathered up her stuff. As she walked to the front doors, she noticed a red-headed (more of a strawberry-blonde) girl staring at her. The look in her eyes suggested she knew her, but Willa had never seen the girl before in her life. Willa kept walking.
The main office was buzzing with students and teachers alike. Willa walked up to the big, curved desk and waited. A woman, who Willa assumed was the secretary, came to the desk and asked Willa her name and grade level.
"Willa Evans, eleventh grade," she responded.
"Ah yes. The new girl. Right this way," the secretary lead her to a back room where another student was waiting. He was sitting at a table reading a book when they walked in. The secretary told her that he was going to be her tour guide and left the room. The student stood up, shook her hand, and proceeded to introduce himself,
"Hi, I'm Mason. And I'm going to be showing you around the school."
