James Potter and Lily Evans both sat on a broomstick, an Icebolt, a thousand feet up in the air.
It hovered there, providing a nice view of what they would die on if they fell.
A moment of silence passed through their conversation.
Lily said, "If I wanted to, I could die right now. I could jump off this broom."
A bit surprised, James replied, "I'd save you with my broom. You'd survive. If I, on the other hand, fell, then I would surely die."
She pointed out, "I'd save you with my magic."
"You would," he agreed.
"So neither of us can die?" she asked.
"Unless we both fall, yes."
"But we won't fall, right?"
Lily glanced at the Quidditch pit that looked to be the size of a child's playtoy.
"You know," said James, "A great man once said, 'We are all part of the biggest proportion. Ten out of ten of us will die."
"Who was the great man? Or do you not know?"
James gave her a wry smile. "My father was the one who first told me that quote. I asked him who the man was."
"So, who was it?" Lily was quite curious now.
"My father told me that his father had told him the saying. His father hadn't known either."
"So nobody knows his name?" Lily raised an eyebrow. "If he was that great, shouldn't they have known it?"
"Maybe," replied James softly, "He wasn't that kind of great. Perhaps he was the kind of great person that sends quotes into the world, adressing them from anonymous."
