The Hardest War
He wakes up in the morning
and looks at what's in store
He packs up his stuff
and walks right out the door
His Father and Grandfather
They were no different before
He's got a legacy to carry out
A job to finish, of that he's sure
So when he makes his way up
and stands in the midst of the crowd
it's no surprise, they all circle up
their cheers become loud
He knows what he's got to do
and yet his stomach clenches tight
He's confused
This isn't the first time that he's had to fight
But he knows its wrong
He should have stopped long ago
But he didn't for his Mother
Who had no money to show
A women, once the best of the best
Now the lowest of the low
So he's got to do his duty
In order to show this whole town
To gain respect, to send them chills as he speaks
Just by hearing the sound
And so his opponent steps up
And yet he's cowering in fear
He's got a duty entrusted to him
For the same reason he's here
And he realizes, his Mother
would have greatly disapproved
for he was fighting his Brother
who had the same purpose to prove
And so he turns his back
and backs away from the crowd
The second they noticed
their cheers had died down
His Brother looks up
with a face of relief
He kneeled down, hands raised up
said thanks, to the G-d of his belief
And yet in a moment he stood
and he knew that he should
find the Brother that saved him
shake his hand and thank him
For that day marked the rest
They had passed the greatest test
of the Holy, Almighty one
that our Forefathers had all done
And so he found him
crying, shaking to his Mother
He said, " I couldn't do it Ma!"
He sobs, " He's my Brother!"
And a tear slides down her cheek
and she clasps both of his hands
and says, " It's ok, darling"
And adds, " I understand."
He's confused and scared
and yet she dutifully shared
her own story that had occurred
when she was a young girl
" I fought with my sisters
and saw the tears
that they had shed
I spent sleepless nights
crying, all alone in bed"
"Because, I was sorry and frightened
that they would hate me forever
and that was the way it all was
some even thought me clever"
"But now I know
it's a shame, so stupid and wrong
I'm proud of you two
for stopping my sons"
"Hopefully, they'll all learn
to stop fighting their brothers
stop all the fighting
and love one another"
"The girls will hold hands
and sing with their sisters
They'll all gather 'round
and speak to the listeners"
And say:
" We are The Chosen
and we've got a reason
to join hands together
And stop with the teasing!"
"We were meant to be loved
and in return love the other
to set an example
and have peace with each other"
"If we fight amongst ourselves
How will we protect
Those that we love?
We were created to help one another
a decree sent from above"
"We might have been
blinded by hate
So it was difficult to see
that I'll always need you
and you''ll always need me"
"So lets stop the fighting
and begin to have peace
We are The Chosen,
The destined
G-d needs us to learn
all of his lessons"
And the Mother finished speaking
and glanced at her sons
who were crying, embracing
sorry for all that they'd done
One said, " I'll never fight a Brother"
The other said, " I'll never fight too"
for the Brothers loved each other
and knew that G-d had approved
The Mothers were happy
The Fathers were too
for their children had gotten along
they were starting a-new
And this is why
it's so sad to see
the blood shed of a brother
when it was our hand to be
the bringer of the suffering
was of a brother of the...
