"So what's your story?" He asked while they waited on the bleachers for practice to start. He was spread out using the bleacher behind as a back rest. She sat in between the seats letting her legs hang off the edge of the bleachers.
"What do you mean my story?" She turned to look at him as the rest of the ducks were on the ice goofing around.
"How is it a pretty girl like you puts on ten pounds of hockey equipment and stands in front of a goalie net?" He gave her a devilish smile. Julie blushed at the fact that he called her pretty she looked down to hide her embarrassment.
"Well the honest answer is at first it was just to make my dad happy, but after the first year I was hooked," She smiled at the memory of her father back in Maine. "See the thing is it's just me and my dad. After my mother passed away my father hasn't been the same."
"I'm sorry," He looked at her with true sympathy evident in his eyes.
"It's ok it was a long time ago. I just always have this feeling that if I become something big he wouldn't be so sad anymore. It's not that he neglects me or I'm just striving for his attention. It's just we never had much in common besides my schooling and hockey, beyond that my dad is a bit clueless when it comes to girls," she had a soft smile on her face. "What about you? What's the great Dean Portman's story?" Portman chuckled and shook his head as she nudged him with her shoulder.
"Not much to tell really it's me my mom and my older sister. My father is basically out of the picture. He's not a bum or anything he's in the military. So after a while my mom got sick of the moving so we just stayed in Chicago. He still shows his face once in awhile but it doesn't mean much," He sighed, Julie placed her hand on his arm. Dean looked into her face and put his hand on top of hers. "So I got into trouble a lot and my mom didn't know what else to do so she signed me up ever since then I've never looked back. I like being an enforcer gets some of the anger out sometimes you know? So that's pretty much it." They sat there in comfortable silence their fingers slowly intertwining. They looked at each other understanding one another without having to say another word.
"Ducks!" Julie jumped as Gordon yelled out as he walked down from the stands. Dean let out a chuckle at her expense that granted him a light punch in the arm by her. "Let's get ready for some warm ups." They smiled and headed for the ice.
