A/N: I'm just going to say this outright: I ignored the Epilogue. No-one ever shows Rose in a light other than that of intelligence, I don't think. I believe I have broken a boundary.
I refuse to use the terms used for marks during OWLs and NEWTs. I don't think Rowling used them until fifth year, because Harry had to ask what they all stood for then. Thus, I will use the typical North American system of the alphabet.
Is this a one-shot? I'm not sure.
Father's Daughter
"I don't get this, Hugo."
Rose, her turquoise eyes confused, deep red hair escaping the tie almost on top of her head, flopped down in the plastic chair across the table from her brother Hugo in the study hall built three years ago. "What is the difference between -?"
Hugo let her go no farther. "Just hand me the page, Rose," he said, exasperated.
.:. :.: .:.
Let me take a few moments to explain.
Five years before our story stars, Rose Weasley had gone to Hogwarts and been sorted into Gryffindor house, just like the rest of the Weasley-Potter clan. One year later Hugo Weasley had gone to Hogwarts and was sorted into...Ravenclaw? Like none of the rest of his family?
Yes, the youngest child of Ron and Hermione Weasley was sorted into Ravenclaw, much to everyone's surprise. He had always been quiet, yes, often disappearing to his room to read. But then again, so had his mother at that age, and she was most definitely a Gryffindor; everyone had just assumed that Hugo was more his mother's son. They just didn't realize how true this was, that he had been her absolute extreme.
Meanwhile, Rose was doing well enough in school. She didn't have stellar marks, but passed respectably with Bs and B plusses. Her third year, though, was when it all fell apart for her. Her marks went to the absolute extremes, either barely passing with Ds and C minuses or soaring with A plusses; those A plusses were few and far between, mostly in DADA class.
Then Hugo showed up, taking classes in the year above him and acing them all. He was the smartest student in the school since his mother had been there. Now, one might think that all this went to the child's head. But no, Hugo kept his head down, trying to act like any normal kid.
And so, in study hall, Hugo decided to help his sister in any school subject possible. Because that's what family does.
.:. :.: .:.
The question that Hugo saw on the page in front of him was fairly easy, something that Professor MacNiall, Potions Master, would expect everyone to know well enough to elaborate upon. But, if he could pick only one, Hugo would have to say that Potions was Rose's worst class.
"Okay, Rose, think about it. What, exactly, is a bezoar?"
"Um...give me a moment..." Rose deliberated.
Hugo folded his arms on the table in front of him and lay his head down on his arms, face down. He sighed in exasperation.
"Oh, I know! It's a kidney stone from a goat!" exclaimed Rose.
"Good enough," Hugo replied, relieved that his sister might be able to understand a Potions question. "Now, what, exactly is an antidote?"
"Oh, that's easy." Rose was getting more enthusiastic, now that it was coming together. "It's a specific kind of potion that counteracts against poisons, and sometimes against curses that act the same as poisons."
"Good, great," encouraged Hugo. "Now write that down on a different piece of paper and elaborate, just draw it out as long as you can." One good thing about Rose, thought Hugo as he went back to his own work, is that I'll never have to teach her the same thing twice.
A/N: So...did you like it, think it was weird, or hate it with all your heart? Reviews of any kind, whether flame or feedback, are appreciated.
