Robin missed the snow.
It's not like it wasn't his own fault. He had decided to leave, to exile himself from that dark place. He had made that choice years ago. It had been the right choice.
Still, as he gazed out of the window of Titan's Tower at the dark waves crashing relentlessly on the cutting rocks below, he found himself wishing for just a moment that he wasn't here in Jump City, California, enjoying the pleasant, sixty-five-degree weather that most of the country could only dream about on this mid-January afternoon.
It wasn't because he missed the cold. God, he was so glad to be rid of the frosty, Mid-Atlantic winters. No, he definitely didn't long to be in Gotham for the cold.
There had been just one thing he had loved about Gotham's winter weather.
Robin didn't consider himself a very poetic soul. But. . .
That scent in the air when it's about to fall. Clean and fresh and so peaceful. You look up, and you see the little clumps plummeting toward you, bluish against the pale gray sky.
He remembered reading somewhere that snowfall resembles swarms of bees, the way the clusters swarm around each other, too light to just fall straight down. It was an apt description, he decided.
There was something about snow in Gotham, especially. For a few hours in the early dawn, the grimy city became a beautiful one. The people looked out of their windows and forgot their constant anxiety and stress. It was easier to love Gotham when it became beautiful. It's always easy to love something when you could forget the monster it had become.
Robin turned away from the window, finished the last sip from his mug, and left the room.
There was no use missing something he could never have again.
Note: The reference to snow looking like bees comes from Hans Christian Anderson's "The Snow Queen", my favorite fairy tale, and the one on which Frozen is based. Check the story out; it's great.
Saudade: a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. (That's from wikipedia. I just wanted a cool title.)
