One minute he was there, and the next he was gone.
That seemed to happen a lot with The Doctor.
They had been discussing his home planet, the Time War. Rose had brought it up and after much pestering, the Doctor had told of the War. She had seen the pain in his eyes, the sadness, and as he finished, she had hugged him. After, she had turned around for a split second to grab something, and he was gone!
Rose exited the TARDIS quickly, trying to find the missing Doctor, but he was already gone. So the search began.
Four hours later, she had found him in a bar, drunk beyond belief, and had brought him back to the TARDIS.
"What were you thinking?" Rose demanded angrily, the Doctor just stared at her. "Going out there alone. Doctor, what if something had found you or if you let something slip!" Rose yelled. The Doctor was silent. "Well, answer me!"
"I'm alone." The Doctor replied, looking up at Rose with a great sadness in his eyes. "I don't age, I only fall through time, bouncing back and fourth," he murmured, "Sometimes I take people with me, like you..," he added. "But they always die!" he shouted, his temper suddenly flaring. Rose looked at him, startled, he hadn't acted like this before..
Tears began to stream down the Doctor's face, and he stood up, wobbling slightly. "It doesn't matter who I'm with, Rose.. I'm always alone, I always will me!" he shouted, his voice cracking. He began to pace, swaying dangerously but pushing Rose away when she tried to help.
Suddenly, he turned on his heel and stared into Rose's eyes, his own eyes empty, scared, and lonely. "Rose Tyler, why do I live?" he asked. "Why do I get to live when everybody dies?" he murmured. "I don't want to go, I don't want them to leave!" he said, his voice raising. "What's the point in living if everybody leaves you?!" he yelled, his knees buckling as he fell to the floor in a fit of sobs, his entire frame shaking. Soon, Rose was on her knees as well, hugging The Doctor as he cried.
It was that night that Rose Tyler realized; The Doctor was just a lonely, scared man who had lost everything. His home, his family, anybody he had ever loved. That is everything went away right now, he'd be the only one left, just floating out there, completely and utterly alone.
She realized that although he called himself 'The Doctor', he couldn't even heal himself.
