"We're being written out of the story, Skye."
Her sister, previously absorbed in her telescope, turned to flash her a skeptical look.
"What?"
"We're being written out the story. Can't you feel it?"
"I don't even know what you're talking about, much less able to feel it, Jane. What story?"
"Our story... The Penderwicks story."
"Okay..."
"We are gradually becoming less and less a part of it. You'll be gone next year, and then me the year after that. The story is leaving us behind, Skye. We're becoming shadows."
"First off, if anyone's doing the leaving, it's definitely us. There is no way I am ever going to be left behind by some imaginary story that doesn't even exist in the first place. We're living our lives, Jane, just like we're meant to, and I—for one—will never regret that."
"I know... But I still feel like we're missing something. Like we're being left out." There was a pause, riddled with a feeling of loss and regret for lack of time, before: "They're going to have adventures with out us..."
"Yeah. I know..."
"Doesn't that make you sad?"
"It makes me hungry."
"What?"
"Come one, Jane. Lighten up a bit. We'll be going on our own adventures too, you know. Now come on in to dinner before everyone else devours it."
Left alone in the dark night once again, Jane signed and tried to ignore the echo that pulsed around her.
We're being written out of the story...
(End.)
So... The Penderwicks in Spring is coming out March 24th, 2015. (Woohoo!) In Batty and Ben's point of view... :-( I love Batty and Ben, but I can feel Birdsall easing our favorite characters out of the tale, and that makes me very, very sad. That means we'll all just have to compensate!
