Author's Note: Alexis tries to reach out to Zane. You can't help someone back up if they're still falling.
"Please. Don't do this!"
It was her last attempt to sway him back. The words uttered were forced, shrill. But their strength dissolved as the wind and crash of thunder wrapped itself around them, nearly drowning them out, turning them into a desperate plea. This was not how it was supposed to be. Zane, of all people was not meant to be like this. He was the strong one. Always the strong one. Why ... how could he have fallen so far? Alexis gazed back through her tears, meeting the unflinching glare of Zane Truesdale.
"Do what?" A sneer.
Zane stood tall, barely acknowledging the rain and wind as Alexis continued to tremble. Her Obelisk blue uniform was completely soaked through. She wrapped her arms around herself, wishing she hadn't followed Zane out into the dark night. But if she didn't try, who else would? They used to be close but now everything had changed. The Zane she knew had changed. She didn't like this new one. The one who everyone was talking about, going crazy about. This one was cruel ... nothing like the Zane who had stood by her, comforted her when Atticus had gone missing.
"Come back with me." Alexis choked back a sob, holding out her hand to him. If she could just take him back to the dorms, back to his friends, back to Syrus - who's heart was breaking, had been breaking - ever since this awful change in his brother. If she could just show him how worried everybody was, how much they missed the old him, maybe then Zane would realize what he was doing. Maybe then he would go back to being the good friend and great duelist, the respected duelist he once was.
Zane stared at her silently, for a few moments, an almost bemused expression on his face, before he turned around and walked away. Disappearing from sight within seconds as the darkness enveloped his black leather clad figure.
Alexis screamed for him to come back, straining her eyes and blinking back her tears. The wind was the only thing that responded to her cries, howling mournfully back.
Did losing to Aster Phoenix make you fall this deep?
Resigned, Alexis began heading back to the dorms. There was nothing she could do right now but watch the destruction that ensued in his duels. The cruel taunts, those deadly moves and that cold glare. It wouldn't stop. It would never stop until Zane stopped it all himself. And that's when she realized -
Zane was still falling.
There would be no stopping until he hit the ground.
