"Edward."
Ed froze. It was the first time he had heard Roy called him by his first name in the office. Somehow, it annoyed him.
"You know what, Mustang, I hate my name." He turned back to face Roy.
Roy looked surprised. "Why? It's a pretty nice name, Edward."
"I guess it's just different people's opinions, but I really hate mine."
Roy frowned. "Is there any chance that it means you like being called Ed better?"
"No. Ed or Edward, I hate it all the same." He paused. "If there's one thing that I do hate about my mother, it is that she gave me this name." Once the words were out of his mouth, he regretted it a little. His mother was such a nice person. How could he ever hate her just for giving him his name?
"Does Alphonse know that you hate your name?" Roy asked, curious. Recently, he had found out that Ed trusted him a lot, but he did not think that Ed trusted him more than his own brother.
"He doesn't. Actually, I consider myself lucky sometimes that I was not given the name Alphonse. It's even worse than mine." Ed pulled a face.
Roy chuckled. "Do you like the name Fullmetal then?"
Ed pondered this. "I like it, but it's not a real name. Regardless of the times I've heard it, it's still strange, as if it's not my name."
Roy smirked. "That's the name a dog of the military has to bear."
"Your name's better than mine," Ed said suddenly.
"Really? I used to hate it. Then I told myself that my name doesn't really matter, it's who I am that matters." His smirkshifted into something more of a smile. "Your name doesn't matter to me, you do. It's you that I love, not your name."
Lips brushed softly against Ed's cheek.
"Fullmetal, you are dismissed."
