It was funny, Daniel thought, how every once in a while, a song could match someone's thoughts so completely. It had, of course, happened to him before, but never had he felt as strongly about what was reflected.
The reason the song meant so much- in fact, the whole reason he was in the predicament he was- could be boiled down to one word.
Jack.
Daniel had been in his office working on an artifact brought back by one of the other SG teams when the song had played on his radio.
Perfect by nature
Icons
of self indulgence
Just what we all need
More lies about the
world
Daniel had looked up and stared at the radio, already wondering when the song would deviate. But it didn't.
That
never was and never will be
Have you no shame don't you see
me?
You know you've got everybody fooled.
He'd poured coffee from his coffee maker, rolling the words about in his mind.
Look, here she comes now
Bow down and stare in
wonder
Oh, how we love you
No
flaws when you're pretending.
Daniel had jerked, nearly upsetting his coffee. Sam.
But now I know she
Never was
and never will be
You don't know how you betrayed me
And
somehow you've got everybody fooled.
He sat back down at his desk. Jack and Sam kept running though his brain. He remembered turning away in anger when Jack would flirt with Sam in the commissary. Poor Sam. She thought he was interested. If only she knew...
Daniel sighed. If only the military didn't have that damned policy, none of them would be in the positions they were in. Sam would know he wasn't interested, and Daniel...
Without the mask
Where would you hide?
Can't
find yourself
Lost in a lie.
Daniel pulled himself back to the briefing room, where Jack, Sam, Teal'c, Hammond and he were finishing up a briefing. Sam was staring at Jack again. Jack's eyes flicked to Daniel, and then returned to Sam. Jack smiled at her.
Daniel shook his head and stood up. "If we're done, General?" Hammond nodded and Daniel left. Jack wasn't willing to risk his military career for their possible relationship. He'd rather straight act. That was fine; he'd been doing that all his life. Jack knew what he was sacrificing for the job. He still wanted to do that. Well, as far as Daniel was concerned, that was that. As he walked down to his office, the rest of the song echoed in his head...
I
know the truth now
I know who you are
And I don't love you
anymore.
It never was and never will be
You're not real and
you can't save me
Somehow now you're everybody's fool.
