A/N: This drabble, featuring my favourite 'Alexander' character, the enigmatic, strong-willed warrior, Cleitus, was inspired by a fixed word prompt challenge for 'duty.'

Son Of Ares

I'm a patriot. Pure and simple.

There aren't many things I believe in and even less that I love. But my country and my people's welfare are always foremost in my mind. I'd do anything for Macedonia. Even die for her, if the gods willed it ...

So I became a military man. A true son and follower of Ares.
I found I had an aptitude for war. Had skill as a tactician. Having a good mind helped and I quickly rose through the military ranks and soon came to our king's - Philip - attention. My gift as a brilliant strategist ensured my position as a commander in Philip's vast army. I was prized by him. Valued and respected. And I became his most loyal and trusted confidante.

But Philip now sits at the side of our gods. His son, Alexander, now rules and I'm no longer treated with respect. My skills, judgement and opinions are no longer valued. He prefers the counsel of men who have little or no experience of war.

But I still remain a devoted follower of Ares, inspite of no longer having my king's ear. For I know my duty and will remain true to it. I'll continue to be loyal to my people, my beloved Macedonia and will fight for them until I draw my very last breath ...
