The Pledge
By this I swear, that each and every day
My life will have one purpose, one true goal.
(and all the hopes and fears and plans I made
Will wither and will die within my soul.
I can no longer look to home and wife
To days spent chasing long sought-after dreams,)
I forfeit those to follow this new life.
(A better life? Perhaps, but one that seems
To take my soul, my spirit and my heart)
Following the paths that fate demands
Myself, I'll strive to do my utmost part
And do as others, older, now command.
(But it is hard, this loss of all I crave)
A normal life with family and friends
I now reject. (Dear Lord help me be brave
And do this work until my penance ends.)
