This one-shot is based just after Angela and Hodgins ran out on their wedding. The group met up at Hodgins' house a few hours later, and had a few drinks.
It was late and Booth and Hodgins were the only two left awake. Zach had gone home, Angela had fallen asleep curled up in a chair and Brennan had also fallen asleep against Booth's shoulder.
"Man what did we do to deserve this?" Hodgins said slugging back the last of what was in his glass.
"What?"
"These messed up love lives." Booth just gave him a puzzled look. "I mean Ange and I finally get it right and our wedding gets stopped because she's already married. Zach, well Zach has no love life. Brennan, you know her story, Sully sails off into the sunset. She broke it off with David, your man that murdered his own brother and so on. And you…" Hodgins tilted his head. "I don't know your story Man."
"Yeah you do. Or at least Angela does." He smiled. "Well Cam and I ended it a while back, and Rebecca and I… well I can't exactly categorise our relationship… and Tessa and I broke up ages ago. And that's it. Wow you're right our love lives do suck." Hodgins nodded and added,
"You forgot one thing!" he received another puzzled look. "You still haven't hooked up with the woman you're meant to be with!" he gestured towards Brennan's sleeping form.
"Either you've had too much to drink or Angela has warped your mind Hodgins, Bones and I, its never going to happen, just accept it! And try and get that into Angela too." he sighed. Hodgins changed the subject.
"Whatever happened between you and Tessa?"
"We broke up." Booth said bluntly.
"Well I got that."
"She broke up with me. Because I… well it's embarrassing." He said.
"When is anything that has to do with a girl not embarrassing." Hodgins said raising an eyebrow.
"Ok well… I called her Tempe." He said and immediately, as if on queue, Brennan shifted and her head fell onto Booth's lap.
"How did you manage that? I mean you never call the Doc Tempe!"
"I don't know. It just slipped out."
"Ouch. But I mean that's kind of harsh! I mean I call Angela the wrong name every now and again and she hasn't dumped me yet." He laughed.
"Well I didn't call her that in the middle of a normal conversation," Booth explained "I called her Tempe while we were… You know!" Booth muttered.
"While you were what?" it took a few seconds for it to sink in with Hodgins, what Booth meant "Oh you mean….WOW man! What the… How did you. You called her your partner, who you continuously deny that you like, 's name in the middle of…" but he was interrupted by a squeal, that surprisingly didn't wake Brennan.
"Oh God, please tell me you didn't hear all that Angela." Booth said.
"Only every word G-man.!" She said sitting up. "Every word."
"Great…" he bit his lip. "…Ange it meant nothing! It was just a slip. Don't go getting any ideas!" he said.
"Booth you know that was your subconscious telling you that you want to be with her! Maybe you should talk to Dr Wyatt about it.$" she said her eyes wide with excitement.
"Hodgins help me here!" he turned to Jack.
"Sorry man but I got to agree with Angela!" he said.
"Thanks a lot. Angela it was just a slip of the tongue! It…" but Angela interrupted.
"Booth it doesn't matter what you say I know the truth! Even if you don't yet." She grinned and curled back up into a ball. Booth knew he'd never hear the end of this.
It just always bugged me that they never said anything about Booth and Tessa breaking up! so I thought I'd give my own reason. I know it probably had everything to do with what Angela told them about the stages and all that but I liked this idea myself.
