1 Last Scene
Shounen-ai, spoilers for Episode 48 onwards and Endless Waltz. Angst.
Title taken from the Alien Ant Farm song "Movies".
The companion piece to "In the End".
Gundam Wing belongs to it's respective owners…
"The few memories
Lingering in my heart"
- 'Faraway Dawn', Zech Merquise's image song
The red landscape is empty of anything other than a few rock formations, craters and such. There's an impenetrable silence on the outside, slowly creeping through the plexi-glass of the temporary Mars base. A little further off there are a few other dome-like structures, illustrating the infinitely slow task of tera-forming the planet…
Zechs didn't really see the far off buildings, didn't see the desolate planet or even the glare on the glass, thrown up by the internal lights. He'd long ago stopped trying to care about anything in the present, mind fixed firmly on the past.
Treize…
Zechs had dreamt about his lost love the night before, just like every night since… since forever. He couldn't remember the last time he'd not seen the final battle for the Earth replayed in the theatre of his subconscious…
If only he'd done things differently, if only he'd been stronger, as Treize needed him to be. It had been foolishness to attempt to destroy the Earth. Of course he'd known that Treize would… He'd meant to fire the Libra cannon. He'd meant to kill the one person he loved, the one person who had loved him…
Noin stopped just beside Zechs. He didn't look at her. He didn't notice her heart-broken look, her gaze passing over his features, as if looking at him for the last time.
Noin was there, just like always, ever faithful. But he didn't deserve that. He'd betrayed his beloved. How could Noin be so blind, how could she not see how worthless he was? Can Treize see that now? From beyond, does he now realise that this failed Prince could never be worthy of him?
She was talking beside him, not to him though.
How little strength he had left. No will to carry on. Not like Treize, never that courageous. He lived his life like it was a grand opera.
The voices beside him sound so sad. Zechs doesn't even both to listen.
It seems like hardly any time has passed since then. The last scene is imprinted on his mind. The tragic hero falling to an honourable blade. WuFai. Did he understand Treize in the end? Or had they all simply played their parts as ordained by the script. What role did he play in Treize's self-constructed tragedy? Villain, murderer, faithless lover?
There are more people hovering round him.
It didn't matter, he didn't want to think about the rest of the world any more. He'd done everything that Fate had wanted him to do, hadn't he? He'd done everything that he could have done to restore Peace. It was what Treize would have wanted. Even if it was never enough, he had given everything, sacrificed everything. All for Treize, all for Treize's dream.
Noin's grip on his arm was gentle, she was speaking softly.
He's sorry, but she can't make a difference now. He wants to be alone with his memories. To cling to the last vestiges of happiness that he's ever known. He only wants silence.
She lets go and the medical aids lead him away.
They needn't be sad, just for him. He's done everything that he must and now all he has to do is wait for the dreams to come.
They leave him sitting on the bed in the pristine, white room. Alone.
Treize… He smiles, seeing nothing.
The door closes. Just another room in the Psychiatric Ward.
And he doesn't care what they think, because the air is filled with the perfume of roses once more.
Even more Gundam angst. This time with an even worse twist that death!
I suppose it's a reasonable response for Zechs, all things considered.
Mmm…
