93. Give Up
He looked over at her. She stood rigidly to the side, eyes downcast, arms delicately crossed. It suddenly occurred to him just how timeless and beautiful she was. Like a statue you wanted to stare at forever, but if pushed or jostled the wrong way, it would break. Shatter into a million tiny pieces, never to be put back together again.
She must have felt his eyes on her because she looked up at him. He smiled slightly and she returned the gesture. And then, just as he was about to turn and walk over to talk and get her to loosen up, Dil arrived at her side. And the look she gave him, told Tommy that he'd never have a chance at her.
Who was he to want to hold her by her waist like that, as if it were right and the most common thing in the world? To be able to breathe life into her when she saw him, no matter the situation? He wanted to be able to speak into her ear and elicit the pure tone that was her laugh and make her eyes glitter and skin glow.
In essence, he wanted to be his younger brother. Because Dil could do that, had every right to do them without worry in even the most public of places, because she had chosen him. She wanted him to, allowed him to, and he did as well. As soon as he'd gotten her to laugh and finally unwind, Jomi had stood tip-toe, and placed a chaste kiss to Dil's cheek. Tommy knew immediately what that kiss was.
It was a lovers' kiss. A kiss shared between two people who had found their other half and where now content to let life run its course. She belonged to Dil and he to her. And they would have it no other way. That kiss said so.
Tommy turned away from the sight as his stomach knotted. A cool jealousy was taking up residence beside it, making Tommy go cold. He would not feel this way about her. He couldn't! It was his younger brother's girlfriend and he would NOT try to win her himself. But even as he vowed this to himself, a bitter, stale taste crawled into his mouth and he knew that he was lying.
