Is this story random? Yes. I've recently finished reading Death Note and watching the movies and the anime. I thought about Mello and Near's one-sided rivalry (because Near doesn't seem to care) and thought, Hey, what if Near also got the girl? The one thing that Mello was a sure winner. How would it affect him? So, this was born! I kinda wanted it to be longer, but I'm okay with how it came out.
DISCLAIMER APPLIES. If I owned Death Note, Misa would not be blonde.
Mello was always behind Near. He was always second place. While he hated it that Near beat him at academics, sports, and art, he never hated him more than when Near had beaten him at getting the girl.
Near didn't even know that he had won that battle, and that was one more reason why Mello hated him.
Her name was Elizabeth Micheals. She had blond hair (so blond it was just about white), ice blue eyes, and was the shortest child at the Wammy House. Elizabeth was a genius at setting up security systems and hacking into them.
She came to the Wammy House when she was seven, Near was eight, and Mello was ten. Elizabeth was a quiet girl, and upon receiving the code name E, nodded but said nothing. Mello was interested in her from the start, since she stared at the sky endlessly and nearly always had a dreamy expression on her face as she did so.
"Hi, I'm Mello," he said to her one day.
She turned to him in surprise, but whispered, "I'm Elizabeth, but apparently now I'm E." Her face looked uncomfortable.
"That's okay. My real name isn't Mello either."
"Will you tell me your real name?"
"Maybe one day I will. We have to be friends first."
So they were. She played games with him, he pushed her on the swings and even played dolls with her, and they sat together at meals. Elizabeth trusted him completely and he was the only one who called her Elizabeth because everyone else had forgotten her name.
But when she was nine and he was twelve, something changed. Her dreamy expression followed her everywhere, and when he came back from a trip to France, he found her not alone.
She was with his most hated enemy—Near. They were sitting together, outside, looking at the sky. Elizabeth was talking and Near was talking back.
E wasn't just Mello's anymore. He was forced to share her with Near.
The worst blow was when he left the orphanage nearly three years later.
"Elizabeth, I'm leaving."
She looked up, surprised. "Why?"
"I can't take it here anymore. I'm going to go my own way and do what I want. Near can be L's successor." He stopped for a moment, gathering his thoughts. "Will you come with me?" he asked.
Red bloomed across her pale face. "I-I can't," she stuttered. "This is my home."
"We can make the world our home," he coaxed. "We can go to America."
Her face looked stricken. America was the country she was born in. "I still can't leave," she replied, tears beginning to fall.
And Mello understood. "Elizabeth, you've chosen him, haven't you?" he snarled. He didn't give her a chance to reply, because he moved past her. "I will never tell you my real name."
"Mello, no!" she cried, trying to catch up with him. "Come back!"
"E," a soft voice stopped her. "Let him go. Stay here." Elizabeth turned, knowing it was Near. She walked back to him, deciding to stick with her choice.
Mello swore that day that he had never hated Near more. Near had taken what was his and made it Near's own. How had he done it? How could Elizabeth choose the white-haired emotionless boy over him?
Whenever he felt like he wasn't getting anywhere with the Kira case, he remembered what used to be his and renewed his vigorous search. Mello would win, and maybe Elizabeth would be his again.
He lost everything.
So? How was my first attempt at writing Death Note? I'm sorry for the random OC, I tried to make her believeable.
Please review. Thank you! : )
