The team sat around the usual stationed in Riley's garage, waiting for Sam and Zack to show up from wherever they were. Jackie was busy filing some information on the places that she and KC had gotten. Riley, scribbling some notes into a notebook, looked up at KC. He was appalled by how annoyed she looked. He tugged on KC's sleeve. Way beyond stressed, she pulled it back. The crazy homework, midterms, and extra job hours was starting to get to her. But Riley, being who he is, shook the rejection off and took her hand instead.
"Just follow me." He whispered with a smile. KC looked into his eyes. They were enough to persuade her into getting up and following him. Riley smiled as she hopped off the stool and followed him outside into his backyard.
"So what did you want?" KC asked as calmly as possible.
"Just close your eyes." He said softly. KC did as she was told. She could feel Riley helping her sit down on the outside loungers. She could feel his presence on the one next to her.
"Just focus on me." He said even softer as the night began to set in. He began to serenade her with immense beauty and sereneness-
Love of mine some day you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark
No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark
If heaven and hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
In Catholic school as vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles brusied by a lady in black
And I held my toungue as she told me
"Son fear is the heart of love"
So I never went back
If heaven and hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
You and me have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
It's nothing to cry about
Cause we'll hold each other soon
The blackest of rooms
KC immediately began to picture the last investigation they had gone on. Riley being right next to her, not leaving her in what seemed like the darkest room in the whole structure. She could picture the many times he reassured her that everything was going to be okay that night. She continued to listen to the tranquility of his voice.
If heaven and hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
Then I'll follow you into the dark
KC opened her eyes slowly and looked into Riley's eyes. Even though the darkness of the night had engulfed the Earth, his eyes were more beautiful than ever. Before she had a chance to tell him how much he loved it (even though she knew her eyes said it all), she felt his lips press against hers'. She returned it and felt the stress lift off of her shoulders. It was as if the only thing that was stressing her out was knowing if Riley felt the same way about her. She immediately knew that was what it was.
