A part of her was shocked when he showed up in the middle of the night. But it was just a tiny part. She had always had a feeling he would be back, and there had just been something about tonight – some feeling in her gut – that told her to wait up long after she had run out of things to do.

But she hadn't expected him to be so broken when he finally did come back to her.

And she knew better than to ask him what had happened. She could see it in his eyes, in his face, in the entire way he carried himself. Whatever had happened – and she was sure, beyond a doubt, that she didn't want to know – it had been too much for him. After everything, after all he had been through – even if she was aware of the fact that she didn't know just how much weight he had truly been forced to carry – whatever event had ultimately led him to her door this time, it'd been the one that had become too heavy to carry – that had been greater than all the others.

So she simply held him, allowed him the silent comfort that she knew he sought. Allowed him the feeling of safety, and home, and quiet forgetfulness that any grieving person always sought …

And she knew, perhaps better than anyone, that he deserved it more than anyone else.
