Shiver: Come Back Sam
Chapter 1
*3 years after Sam is cured*
Grace walked up the driveway to Beck's house. At the door, she paused hesitantly, then rang the doorbell.
A few moments later the door opened, revealing a well-dressed, clean shaven Sam.
"Grace! I'm glad you came!"
"When you said you had something to tell me I thought you were in trouble or something!"
"Sorry," he looked away bashfully, hair swinging into his eyes, "Come on in,"
Grace made her way into the kitchen where she took off her coat and sat at the table. Sam entered a few moments later with a beautifully wrapped box.
"What's this?" Grace asked, looking thoughtfully at the box.
Sam got onto one knee and opened the box, "Grace Brisbane, will you marry me?"
Grace's jaw dropped in surprise, "Yes! Yes! Always, yes!" she jumped up and hugged him. His strong arms embraced her and she kissed the side of his neck. "I love you, Sam Roth,"
The next morning found herself in Sam's bed alone. She heard the clanging of a frying pan from downstairs; Sam was making breakfast. She got out of bed and headed for the bathroom. Fifteen minutes later she emerged from the shower into the smell of maple bacon and pancakes. She quickly threw some clothes on and headed downstairs to the kitchen.
"Morning, sunshine!" Sam greeted her with a warm hug. Grace noticed that he smelled like his shampoo and bacon. She kissed him and sat down at the table with a plate of food.
"How did you sleep?" Sam asked as he poured maple syrup on his pancakes.
"Like a baby," Grace mumbled with a piece of bacon in her mouth.
The continued eating in silence until they both cleaned off their plates. They did the dishes together; Grace washing, Sam drying. After that they both headed upstairs to the study where Sam worked on lyrics and Grace read a book. It was a calm, almost uneventful morning but it was perfect.
Birds were chirping outside and the sun was shining bright and warm on the horizon. It felt like nothing could go wrong.
Sam heard something out front. When he looked out the window he saw someone pulling into the driveway. A man got out of the SUV and when he turned around Sam immediately recognized him. Tom Culpeper.
"Grace! He's here! Tom Culpeper, he's here! He's going to try to separate us! We have to go!"
They quickly but quietly ran upstairs and into the attic where no one could find them. Grace heard Tom banging on the door.
Three years ago, he threatened to separate Sam and Grace if any more children were attacked. They heard in the news that a young girl was mauled by the wolves a few weeks ago. It had been so long since they talked to Culpeper that they thought he had forgotten about it. Now that he knew where they were exactly he had come to serve his revenge.
"How did he find us?" Grace whispered to Sam.
"I don't know but I hope he doesn't find us,"
They heard another hard knock on the door then a loud crash!
"I think he broke the door down!" Sam whispered to Grace who was hugging her knees and rocking back and forth on her heels.
"COME OUT OR I'LL COME GET YOU!" Culpeper shouted from downstairs. His hunting boots thumped loudly on the linoleum floors. He started up the stairs.
"Don't make a sound," Sam whispered .
They heard Tom Culpeper walking around on the second floor but nowhere near the entrance to the attic. It was pretty well hidden. You had to go into the walk-in linen closet and go in through behind one of the large cupboards.
"Damn! Their not here!" Tom swore to himself as he began descending the stairs. When he was finally gone long enough for Grace and Sam to come out of hiding, they slowly came out into the hallway.
"I think we're safe," Grace said looking around her to double check.
