Tom Marvolo Riddle, self-styled dark Lord Voldemort, was terrified. He was now the only one standing of his lot. Harry Potter was not dead. And he had been informed that the Elder Wand belonged to the Boy-Who-Lived.
He aimed the Elder Wand at the boy whom he hated more than anything else and shouted out his favorite curse, just as Potter did the same.
'Avada Kedavra!'
'Expelliarmus!'
He saw his own curse rebounding just as it had done during the Halloween night 16 years ago.
He knew without a doubt now, that he wouldn't live on. He had no more Horcruxes to rely on to tether him. He saw his death heading towards him, and his life started flashing before his eyes.
The orphanage. The trip to the mountain side. The collection of trophies from the kids he bullied. Entering Hogwarts. Finding out the truth about his parentage and ancestry. Delving deeper into the Dark Arts than anyone else had ever done. Opening up the Chamber of Secrets. Killing the girl in the bathroom. Framing Hagrid. Killing his father's family and his uncle. Making his first Horcrux, the Diary. Charming Helena Ravenclaw to part with the location of her mother's Diadem. Finding Ravenclaw's Diadem and turning that into a Horcrux. Going to work for Borgin and Burkes. Killing Hepzibah Smith and stealing those two treasures. Making his third and fourth Horcruxes. Going for the interview for the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor, and hiding the Diadem in the room only he had found. Hearing about the Prophecy. Going after the Potter's. Being ripped apart from his body. The years of agony. Coming across a Hogwarts' Professor and learning about the Philosopher's Stone. Being thwarted by Harry Potter again. The destruction of the Diary due to that fool, Lucius' mistake. The return of Wormtail. Gaining a rudimentary body. Depending on Wormtail to feed him. Killing Bertha Jorkins after he extracted every detail from her. Releasing Barty Crouch Jr. from his father's control and planting him at Hogwarts, so that Potter can participate in the ritual to regain his body. Killing the muggle at Riddle Manor. Making Nagini his final Horcrux. Gaining his body back. His wand locking up with Potter's. Potter escaping from the graveyard again. The hunt for the Full Prophecy. Laying a trap in Potter's mind. Blasted Potter and his friends escaping again and his Death Eaters captured. Making Draco take the Dark Mark as a punishment. The death of Albus Dumbledore. Taking over the ministry. The hunt for the Elder Wand. The Battle of Hogwarts.
All his quests. All his choices. All the chances he could have had. All the roads not taken.
He wondered if he had done the right thing. He felt a little regret.
That was the last thing he ever felt.
