A/N: Hello TVD fandom. I am new to FF and Tumblr (junesdrabblings on tumblr.) this however, is not my first drabble or fanfic. I post drabbles, one-shots, multi-shots, multi-chaptered fanfictions, etc. You can learn more in my profile.
Now onto the story; this will probably be just a one-shot/drabble, unless you guys want otherwise.

Disclaimer: I don't own TVD or any of it's characters, nor do I take credit for anything you recognize from the show or book.

It was on a soggy April 14th that Caroline Forbes knew she had made a mistake. A big one at that. She was sitting on the swing, at a park just outside of Mystic Falls her little hometown, the rain misting around her and staining her dress with dark splatters.

She almost laughed, his voice invading her thoughts for the millionth time that day.

"Small town boy, small town life, it will never be enough for you."

She had scoffed. Shoved the words back at him, the next year she remained blinded to the actions around her. Elena was in danger, kill anyone who could harm her. Elena needed the cure, kill Kol. Klaus needed to die, send Caroline she probably wont be in danger. Caroline's coral lips curled up into a snarl. She was a sheep, being led to slaughter and she didn't mind- these were her friends.

Blind loyalty, he said. They'll end up killing you for her, he said. Your affiliation is useful- they like your friendship, but they'll give it up in a heartbeat for her, he said.

And Caroline tossed the words aside with a roll of her blue eyes.

Now, on this shitty day in April of all months, she finally understood. Caroline realized that she had fire- fire gave off light, it gave you warmth, could keep you alive- but fire could also harm, it could destroy, demolish. It was only a matter of which side you choose. They were the same, both craved acceptance, the need for risk, the hunger to be strong.

But it was too late.

Caroline finally made peace with her feelings. She wanted him, needed him. And he was simply gone.

The day he left, she thought nothing of it- counted it as a blessing. Now that day burrowed itself in her heart, too deep to dig out, a sharp pain inside when she moved.

A whisper of a accented voice, a flash of golden irises, the glint of sharp teeth, a reminder of what once was.

Because that's all it was.

A memory.
