On Mamoru's first day of being an intern he felt inspired and full of life, ready for anything and everything. This was the job he had wanted for a long time and he was prepared to put up with the long hours, sleepless nights, and hard work it would take to get to the end of his goals.
Working eighty or more hours per week and staying up "on call" every fourth night was rough. He missed spending time with Motoki and the girls, but most of all he missed spending time with Usagi. He craved her bright smile, the touch of her hand, and the sound of her voice even more then he craved the sleep he was missing and the food he tended to sometimes forget to eat.
By the middle of the first year Mamoru was questioning why he had ever wanted to become a doctor in the first place. He had difficulties getting along with the doctor overseeing his internship and at times felt as if the man was out to deliberately get him to fail. He especially had trouble with a lot of the medical bureaucracy and the administrators little regard for the patient over the money they were receiving.
Mamoru tried to stick it out, tried to ignore his increasing feelings that he wasn't cut out for this job. He pushed himself harder, determined to accomplish what he had set out to do. This was the job he had always dreamed about and Mamoru wasn't a quitter. Usagi encouraged him as well on those rare times that he actually got to spend some quality time with her. Still more and more Mamoru struggled to find the heart he would need to get through the tough times ahead and actually become a doctor.
It wasn't until the year was nearly over that Mamoru found the reason he needed to become the doctor he had always dreamed of being. A mother and a small boy were brought in one day from a car accident. The mother was grievously injured and wasn't expected to live. The boy was just about the age Mamoru had been when he lost his own parents and just like him the boy would be alone in the world if his mother didn't make it.
Mamoru assisted the doctor that was taking care of the mother. After hours of work, the mother finally pulled through, though it was touch and go at the end. Mamoru learned a lot of things that night, but most importantly he relearned the reason he had wanted to become a doctor in the first place.
The rest of his residency was by no means easy, but he never lost the heart and courage he needed to finish. He never forgot that as a doctor he would have the ability to heal those that needed his help.
