Pairing: Axel/Roxas
This was it.
Roxas had always told him that he could be overdramatic; it's not something he didn't know. People had always given him that look, especially after he would find out exciting news and react to it… strangely. So Roxas telling him didn't really come as a shock, it's just that hearing it like that made it concrete, and he couldn't pretend that it was just something in his mind, him telling himself that he was just thinking too much and of COURSE he's not a drama queen.
But now…
Axel sighed and pushed his hair back irritably. "Why are you leaving?" It was bad enough that Roxas hadn't told him earlier, but to break the news in the middle of a McDonalds?
His blond companion just looked at him with a disdainful expression. "I've told you so many times already. I'm sick of this place. It's like a disease. It's just-"
"Suffocating you, yeah, yeah, I know." The redhead shook his head, sucking down a milkshake and looking up at Roxas, which gave him the look of a pouty puppy dog. Roxas just rolled his eyes and whispered, "And I'm supposed to be the whiny one…"
"Well then you've got to take me with you."
"I've told you this before, more than once, I can't. Listen, I'll come back to you or whatever. And I'll call you everyday so you don't go crazy and set people on fire," Roxas pushed his straw around the drink.
That's when Axel suddenly understood what Sora had said to him in such a small voice. "He's a heartbreaker in the making." It was almost cruel. Roxas had come flitting there on a whim, become the only person that Axel really cared for, and was now leaving, because it was "suffocating him."
"Axel? Are you paying attention to me?"
Axel looked up. He hadn't been. All he had been thinking about was how he had to make this one last night, the night to remember.
.--.
The next morning, Roxas climbs out of bed, looking all natural. Slowly he looks around, then pulls on his pants and T-shirt, as if he's used to making love with his best friend and waking up in a strange place. As Axel watches him, he tries to shake this horrible feeling that he will miss Roxas a lot more than Roxas will miss him, no matter what the blond boy says. So Axel just smiles at him and says, "You sure you can stand up on your own?"
It's a joke he shouldn't be saying. It's not funny right now.
But he just turns around. He doesn't put on his "you're a pervert" face, didn't even grace him with a smile, he doesn't laugh, he doesn't look scandalized or call Axel weird or stupid or anything. Roxas just has this strong, dignified look on his face and …he's grown up. He walks towards the door, and I should be the one leaving, not you.
He only says one thing before he walks out of the door. "I always could."
.--.
This was just one of those things where I was like, "what if…?" (laughs) And the what if, was for Axel being dependent. There are many hints of it in the game, but nothing straight out.
