Jasmine

It was amazing, he thought. How a simple smell can act as the sound track for your life. The way the glimpse of an aroma can bring a hundred smiles, or a hundred tears. A joyous occasion or a memory that is best left in the shadows.

For him it was jasmine, the sweet smell of jasmine. It had been there with him since the very beginning.

He remembered his mother's perfume, the special one she wore on extra special occasions…his birthday, state dinners and such, that brought a smile to his face but also tears to his eyes. As after that time she had disappeared, he had never been able to smell that particular kind again.

Just like his mother, the love of his life had worn jasmine. Mai had been very fond of the scent, and in the memories of the most intimate and special moments they used to have together, it hangs like a fog. He remembers how the smell lingered around the day he finally put his soul mate, his best friend and his everything to rest, jasmines splayed on the memorial table. More tears stung his eyes.

But as he remembered looking into his (not very young anymore) son's face in his cot for the first time, how the sheets washed in jasmine had permeated the air, a smile filled his face. The beginning of his son's life is marked by the scent.

Yes, jasmine had been there there through everything.

And as Fire Lord Zuko rested his old bones in his favourite chair, jasmine candles burning through the darkness, he wondered if it would be there at the end for him too.
