Metaphors
"Life is a giant, everlasting Lemon."
Nate almost choked on a mouthful of his drink. Mitchie paused, her fork halfway into her mouth and Caitlyn shot Jason a confused but curious look.
"What?" asked Jason, on noticing everyone's expressions.
"Um, Jase? What exactly do you mean by 'everlasting lemon?" asked Caitlyn, probably the first to recover from Jason's announcement.
"It's a metaphor!"
"Yeah, we know that," said Mitchie. "But what… sort… of lemon?"
"You know, life is like a lemon because they're bright coloured, some people find it nice, some people thinks it's bitter, you know, the fruit! Is there any other kind?"
"No!" Mitchie, Nate and Caitlyn shouted in unison. Good choice, they didn't think it'd be wise to give him any… ideas.
"Sorry about that Jase," said Nate. "Keep going – carry on… Enlightening us with your misunderstood metaphor."
"Well, the lemon," Jason began, "Could also represent the sun. It's yellow and if the sun burns out... like… a mouldy lemon-" Caitlyn failed in trying to stifle an exploding fit of giggles and fell off her chair laughing. Jason carried on, either ignoring it, or being completely oblivious to it.
"If the sun burns out then we'll all die, so it has to last a long time."
"Oh, so that's where the everlasting part comes in!" Mitchie said. She had got to stop listening to Jason's insane theories.
"Hey guys!" Shane walked over to the table and sat down next to Mitchie, planting a kiss on her cheek in the process.
"What are we talking about?"
"Oh, Jason was just telling us his theory," Nate said. Caitlyn whispered something into Nate's ear.
"What was it about?"
Caitlyn purposely waited until Shane has taken a huge mouthful of water.
"Life is a giant, everlasting Lemon," Shane choked on his water so hard it sprayed out through his nose.
"What?" Shane's face was hilarious.
"Yes!" Caitlyn and Nate high fived, laughing their heads off.
