THE SHADOW OF THE PAST

Shadows haunt me in the Night

When all has passed beyond the Light

And thoughts of old come back to taunt

A soul now wasting, faded, gaunt

I fear sleep for all my dreams

Are filled with dread and evil screams

Which plague my mind all night and day

And do not hark my "go away"

Then when I finally close my eyes

The past returns to terrorise

So all I see are golden Rings

Hooded faces, evil things

They chase me to the Eye of Flame

Which tortures me and loathes my name

And sets old wounds and scars alight

Then disappears out of sight

So for a moment, I'm alone

In a dark land, far from home

I curl up in a ball and cry

While golden rain falls from the sky

But this rain burns and weighs me down

And then I know in what I drown

A Sea of Rings fall from the sky

In which is seen the Burning Eye

No, now it's Gollum, wait, it's Sam

I'm going mad, I know I am!

I'm falling, crying, burning, screaming

Wake me up! I must be dreaming!

Wake me up! The fire nears

Help me, please! Nobody hears

It's over, I will be consumed

I can't be saved, the world is doomed

A final scream, my body shakes

"Mr Frodo, please awake."

Mr Frodo? It can't be true

But sure enough, it's Sam I view

And so another Night has gone

And I have lived to see the dawn

But even in the sunlight's rays

The memory of the Ring's ablaze

I'm drenched in sweat but slowly rise

While Sam observes with worried eyes

He's watched this scene play out before

I cannot burden him no more

Through dreams, I can't escape the past

And so the time has come at last

For me to leave across the Shore

For peace and rest in Valinor
