The inspiration for this one was from listening to 'Family Portrait' by P!nk. I think I'm going through a song inspiration thing... anyways, this is in the point of Mycroft. I think this song suits him in a really sad way, I guessed at the age difference between Mycroft and Sherlock. I don't own the characters or the BBC sadly. Enjoy :D
If he told you anything about it, you'd think that Mycroft had a pretty sad childhood. His dad left the family when Mycroft was was 6 and Sherlock was 2. His parents never got on for what Mycroft could remember. Always arguing over something. Whether it was money, himself and his brother, his dad staying out all the time. It was like world war 3.
You fight about money, 'bout me and my brother
And this I come home to, this is my shelter
It ain't easy growing up in World War III
Never knowing what love could be, you'll see
I don't want love to destroy me like it has done my family
Nobody apart from himself and Sherlock know that's why they never like getting close to people. They don't want to fall in love just to feel like what it's like to fall and have your heart torn out. They never talk about it, especially not to Mummy. It upset her so much when Sherlock started school and started to ask why other kids had dad's and they didn't. Mycroft had to explain it to him. He'll never forget what Sherlock said.
"But why don't we have a Daddy? We have a Mummy. The teacher at school said that's how we're made."
"Yes that's true, but we don't have one"
"Why not? Is he dead?"
Mycroft forgot that Sherlock had recently learnt about death.
"No. When you were very young, he and Mummy were very angry at each other and he left"
Sherlock frowned.
"It doesn't mean he doesn't love us Sherlock"
"Well obviosuly he doesn't love us. I've never seen him. Why do that to people you love? I certainly don't love him"
Mycroft stared at his 10 year old little brother, slightly shocked at the coldness in his voice. He vowed there and then to never stop showing Sherlock he loved him. If only he knew that it was that what drove Sherlock away because at the same time, Sherlock vowed to never love anyone, not even his own family. With all the coldness he could muster, he said the one thing that would follow him throughout life.
"Caring is not an advantage".
Despite preaching what his brother said all those years ago, Mycroft remembered wanting his dad to come back. He wrote letters with all the promises a 6 year old could promise until Mummy found out what he was doing and stopped him, saying he was better off without him. He remembers the last words he wrote in his last letter.
In our family portrait, we look pretty happy Why won't you come back to us? I'll be so much better, I'll do everything right
I'll be so much smarter
Sherlock will sleep at night
The first italics are part of the song. The next are memories and the last are a mix of the song and memories. I changed it a little bit. So much angst D: I hope you like it though. I'm good at writing angst ._. Reviews are love :D
