Zoo on Parade
By: Kathryn Yurek
The zookeepers were very excited on Monday morning. "The parade is today! All the animals are going to ride on colorful floats down Main Street for the town's people to see." Zookeeper Anne said. Zookeeper Bob smiled and asked "Are all the animals ready to go?" Zookeeper Anne nodded and together they got the animals loaded onto floats and through the gates to where the parade would start.
"I like the children. They feed me peanuts." Said the elephant. "The children always admire how tall and graceful I am." Said the giraffe. "The children like my roar." Said the lion. The monkey hung upside down from a branch on his float and said "They like me, too because I'm funny." The children liked all the animals.
Soon, the people of Smithtown came out of their shops and houses to see the parade. First came Mayor Fran on her float that was painted the town's colors, red and yellow. Next came the marching band, tooting on their horns, blowing in their flutes, and banging on their drums. After them, the police and firemen rode down in their trucks and squad cars. The children cheered as sirens flared.
The last of the people to come down the street were the zookeepers. Some rode on animal floats, some walked proudly. The animals preformed and showed off in their cages. The monkey swung from branch to branch. The giraffe smiled and rose her tall neck. The elephant blew water from its trunk. And the lion roared and swung its tail. The children clapped and cheered.
After the parade, the animals were tired. The zookeepers got them ready for bedtime. They were given dinner and a bath. Then, they all laid down in their habitats and fell fast asleep. They dreamed about the children and the parade. They dreamed about the Fourth of July parade next month. The happy children made all the animals happy. They loved going on parade.
