A Sorting Song

I am a hat, that much you can see

But I am special, you'll soon find out

I know where you all must be

So let me tell you what I'm all about

Long ago, four friends arrived

Built the school in which you sit

They soon found the building thrived

So they taught me to make you fit

For they were growing rather old

And could not remain they feared

So now the story's partly told

In truth, it's longer than Merlin's beard

Four houses in Hogwarts remain

Named for the founders, now long cold

Now I swear that I won't feign

Please go where you are told

If you have a daring soul

And always yearn for adventures more

While your bravery others extol

Then you belong in Gryffindor

If a brilliant mind your gift be

Perfect scores, an always perfect test

Why then, as long as it's up to me

In Ravenclaw you'll try your best

If loyalty is the virtue of which you boast

Patience also a gift you bear

Friends trust you, of all, the most

Then you will find Hufflepuff most fair

If you are ruthless and power mad

Truly cunning you are, your friends know

I'm afraid my news is rather sad

It is to Slytherin you must go

Come forward and place me on your head

It will all be over mighty quick

This is a time when many feel dread

Though I promise I'll be done before you get sick
