forget/don't forget - be sad/smile and rejoice

I.

If I close your eyes for you and sing you a lullaby
will you go to sleep, and forget this sound?
No, of course you won't; it's engraved too deep
and I was a fool to let you hear it first,
let you see my face, and the secrets that slept
beneath, those things you thought were just little flirts
on the job – I'm so sorry, but they're not, and you now know
but that truth, is something that will now taint your heart
forever more.

II.

Even if you tell me to, I won't forget
this thing I've seen, those words that have bled
to my ears.

It's the truth: a strange and deadly truth
but beautiful, the way it fits into the puzzle
of this world.

And you've put my heart at ease
about something else as well. Or are you blind
to the emotions we human women feel?
I am in love, and sadly I am a fool as well
but I am happy still, because that truth of yours
has restored my hope

So don't be sad. Be glad
I'm one less person you now
lie towards
and wish, like me,
that the cold space in your coffin
will soon be occupied once more.

III.

No, I will not wish, not for that.
I know what it is you feel
and your wish, but I cannot do
what you ask. It's bad enough
you're involved, in this heavy past
of mine.

I will not kill you as well
and I won't stop being sorry
for bringing that beautiful soul of yours
into this.
