Paolo kind of wonders if this is technically incest. They're in-laws, because of Marco and Rosa, but are they really siblings now?
Putting these thoughts behind him, Paolo grabs Tonino's hand, and they race off to buy some more beef for Aunt Gina. Tonino has returned from England with Chrestomanci and has become quite fond of steak.
As they return home, they walk down Via Sant Angelo, and remember trying to sniff their way to the Casa Petrocchi when they were young, little things.
They have a good laugh about it, and then Tonino remembers that he hasn't seen Angelica at all since he's come back. And really, she deserves a visit, doesn't she, he explains, blushing, because, really, he wouldn't have gotten out of the Duchess's grip without her.
And Paolo laughs, partly because his little brother's face is as red as the tomatoes the Casa grows, and partly because that was what he wanted to do after this errand anyway.
So they agree that, after they drop off the meat, they will walk over to the Casa Petrocchi. It is, after all, Rosa's month over there, and Tonino insists that this is why he wants to go.
When Tonino and Paolo arrive at the gate, Rosa is there, mending Marco's clothes. She squeals when she sees Tonino, and gets Marco to open the gate for them.
When they are inside, she squeezes the life out of the younger Montana and then the older one. Renata and Angelica rush out to see what all the fuss is about, and find Tonino, who they haven't seen since Christmas, standing there, watching his brother choke.
Of course, this is unacceptable. So the two girls run up to him, and embrace him as well. It is a festival of reunions, and tears of joy.
Then the two boys are put to work.
Paolo is watching the little cousins with Renata, and they start to talk. About Tonino, about Angelica, about school, about anything really. Paolo smirks, and asks how her ever so ugly teacher is doing. She grins, and whaps him lightly on the shoulder, and as she does so, he feels the butterflies in his stomach return.
They soon move on to the topic of their younger siblings, and both remark on how well they get along now.
I suppose being puppets together will do that to you, he tells Renata, and she nods.
I guess, she replies, but don't they seem a little overly friendly?
Paolo has to agree, looking at them splash water at each other while setting out the laundry to dry.
It's cute, Renata tells him, and he looks at her questioningly.
But, isn't it sort of wrong? Paolo asks her and at her confused look, continues isn't it, well, incest?
Renata looks a little hurt now. Paolo wants to take back everything he said to make her feel bad. Love is love, she tells him, a little curtly, no matter who it is. It also isn't technically incest, sine they aren't related by blood.
Paolo feels a weight come off his shoulders, and before he can even think about what he's doing, hugs Renata tightly.
Thank you, he whispers softly in her ears, as the blood comes rushing to her cheeks. I was really worried about it for a bit.
And then he kisses her. It isn't anything amazing, just a brush of the lips, but when Paolo pulls back, Renata finds herself wishing for more.
The two look away, both faces bright red. Each of them wears a smile.
Later, when the two boys have to leave, Angelica and Renata hug them, and say their good-byes. When the gates have closed, and the two girls have retreated to other jobs, Paolo grins at his brother and comments on Angelica's hugging him longer than strictly necessary. Tonino flushes and runs after his brother, trying to hit him.
Yay for Renaolo! That is what I have officially dubbed this pairing. So, umm, Chrestomanci doesn't belong to me. Please review!
