DISCLAIMER: It's Jo's world, I'm just playing around with it. The song is 'Green Eyes' by Coldplay, which I don't own. The song has been slightly modified to fit the story. (Lyrics are bold and italicized; my part of the story is in normal text.)
James walked through the portrait hole, tears falling freely for everyone to see. He rubbed at his eyes, trying to keep himself together, because what he was about to do was probably irrational. He didn't care. Tragedies always resulted in him doing stupid things. It was almost inevitable. He stopped walking, standing above a girl with wavy auburn hair who was quietly reading in a chair by the fire. She looked up at him, and immediately closed the book.
"James, is everything okay? What's wrong?" questioned Lily. James said nothing, but instead, took her hand and led her down to their favorite tree by the lake. When James began to sob uncontrollably, Lily embraced him, pulling his head down onto her shoulder and stroking his untidy black hair.
After some time, James pulled his head off his girlfriend's shoulder and took her hand again, entwining his fingers in hers. He began to speak.
"Honey you are a rock upon which I stand, and I come here to talk. I hope you understand."
"James, you know you can talk to me. What's wrong?" Lily began to get really worried.
"My parents," he answered. "They were found by Voldemort last night… and… and he killed them. He didn't even use the killing curse! He tortured them, and then used some kind of spell that made their chests burst open! They both bled to death." James could barely explain what had happened without crying.
"Oh my, James, that's awful," Lily did not know what to say. This man, this wonderful man, was usually the one staying strong when everything was falling apart. She couldn't stand seeing him hurt like this. It made her want to weep with him, but she knew that was not an option. He needed support, so she did the only thing she could think of and hugged him tightly once more. She raised a pale hand up to his cheek, brushing the tears away and kissing the places where they had been. To her surprise, James spoke again.
"Lily, I just want you to know, that green eyes, the spotlight shines upon you. How could anybody deny you? I came here with a load, and it feels so much lighter.
Now I met you, and honey you should know that I could never go on without you, green eyes. Marry me," he said confidently, pulling a gorgeous ring out of his pocket.
"James!" Lily gasped. "Your parents just-"
"Lily, listen to me," he pleaded. "I had been planning on proposing to you on graduation day, but things happen. Lily, I love you more than anything in the world. You're my whole life, my love, my very best friend, and now you're my only family. You're everything to me, and I want you to be mine forever. Do me the honor of becoming my wife."
"Honey you are the sea upon which I float. I came here to listen, but I think you should know that nothing would make me happier than being your wife," Lily's heart raced as James smile for the first time that day. He slipped the ring onto her finger and lightly kissed her lips.
"I know you'll help me through whatever obstacles we'll face together, Lils. You know that green eyes, you're the one that I wanted to find, and anyone who tried to deny you must be out of their mind. I came here with a load, and it feels so much lighter since I met you.And honey, I'm so glad that I'll never need to go on without you, green eyes."
With that, the couple stood up and walked back to the castle hand in hand.
Honey you are a rock upon which I stand.
