Eight year old Riza Elizabeth Hawkeye is getting rather annoyed with her best (and only) friend. Her father's apprentice, eleven year old Roy Mustang promised her a great surprise to quote 'turn her frown upside down'. Riza thought this was utter nonsense but accepted her friends' proposal as sort of a challenge.

The two were a rather odd pair. Roy was lanky, loud, and cocky to the point of being arrogant and reckless, Riza was compact, quiet, sensical, and down to earth. They were a rather odd sight physically as well. Roy often wore a button down shirt and jeans, while Riza often dressed in a grubby jumper that was many sizes too large for her. The black hair versus the blonde braids added to the picture. Overall, you would never guess the two to get along at all. They did, but showed their affection through bickering, ordering each other around, or utter silence.

Riza sighed and looked at the clock. "It's nearly midnight." She muttered to herself, tapping her windowpane. "I hope that idiot didn't get lost in the woods." Carefully, the small girl clambered down from her seat on her window and left her bedroom. She tiptoed to the kitchen as not to wake her father. She did not feel like getting beaten up that night. Riza silently grabbed a box of matches and a candle, taking them back to her room.

She climbed back onto her windowsill and set the candle down beside her. Riza took a match out of the box and struck it, carefully lighting the candle. "If Mustang can make fire, so can I." She set the box of matches down and waited.

Minutes later, Roy climbed through her other window, something tightly clutched to his chest. Riza raised an eyebrow, hands on her hips. Roy grinned, chuckling. He blew out the candle and for a few moments the two children stood in complete darkness.

Suddenly, the room was illuminated by what seemed like sparks in Roy's hands. Riza looked closer and saw that her best friend was holding a jar full of fireflies. Riza couldn't help herself. She smiled. Roy grinned and laughed. "Told you I could make you smile!"

Riza rolled her eyes. "You know, Mustang? You're an idiot, but I'll always light a fire for you. If you see a candle, I'm watching over you."
