Pony began writing his report after reading Johnny's letter. He began to remember all the good times he had with the whole gang.

He remembered meeting Cherry Valance at the drive-in, and Two-Bit scaring Johnny and Marcia to death. He remembered Two-Bit laughing at Johnny while he fixed Johnny's hair and asked if Marcia wanted a chew.

He remembered reading Gone with the Wind to Johnny while he was at the church and playing poker with him. Then Dallas taking them to get something to eat at the Dairy Queen. He remembered yelling at Dally for his crazy driving.

Ponyboy then remembered Johnny telling him to stay gold and then watch as Johnny began to sink down into the hospital pillow. He remembered seeing the cops shoot Dally and remembered as Dally called for Pony. They were dead. "Johnny...Dally...their gone..." Ponyboy began to cry and Sodapop and Darry came into the room and began to comfort him. But they knew Ponyboy would at least cry each night.

"Stay Gold Ponyboy." Ponyboy looked up as he heard Johnny's words in his head. 'Goodbye Johnny... goodbye Dally...goodbye my friends.' Ponyboy said to himself and began to cry again.
