A/N: A prompt of "Adaye (Adam/Faye) at the aquarium". :D I love these two and I think if the characters have more interactions in the show, people will begin to see their potential. This isn't really romance though, more just angst.
The array of colors was captivating, and he could not take his eyes off of them. He didn't want to look away. Each creature circled in their watery depths in an endless route: they could never leave this trap.
Adam could not quite remember why he had taken to going to the aquarium in times of strife. He supposed, perhaps, it was a subconscious desperate attempt to grasp a version of his child self. His parents had frequently escorted him to the aquarium, and even then he had been captivated by the sea animals in their giant prisons. The visits used to make him happy; now they were only a reminder of the joy he had lost. It had been about six weeks since the loss of one of their members. Since the loss of Nick. No one had talked about it, not really. They hadn't discussed the situation at all.
Their circle was broken. And so was he.
He sighed, shifting on the bench facing the giant glass window, looking into a prism of floating colors and flooding light from the surface of the water. Standing up, Adam brought the tips of his fingers to graze the hard glass. There was a noticeable absent of visitors from the aquarium, odd for a Saturday; the large room reveled in its silence.
Adam's footsteps echoed in the absence of noise as he made his way into the room adjacent. From this room, one could visit the "shark tunnel", a long, glass half-cylindrical room with the outside acting as a tank: holding hundreds of small sharks. Upon walking inside, to his surprise, he realized he was not alone after all.
A young woman with dark hair pulled into a ponytail had her back to him; her head was back and she was staring up towards the top of the tunnel where sharks swam in fluid motion. Adam knew who it was instinctively, but he didn't know how.
"Faye," he called in a quiet voice.
Faye turned, eyebrows raised in shock. "Oh- I thought- I didn't know any visitors were here," she said, sounding almost distressed. However, she recovered quickly, putting on a grin that Adam knew too well. "Having a fun day out at the aquarium, Adam? Where's your girlfriend?"
Adam glared at her. He knew she wasn't talking about Diana. He didn't even bother to respond to that and simply walked over to her. He saw Faye's smirk disappear and she eyed him, looking somber.
"It's been six weeks," Adam said. From his peripheral vision, Faye nodded.
"Yeah," she said, her voice sounding like a whisper. "Six weeks." They both glanced at the glass of the tank around and over them, watching the sharks swim with steady conviction.
Suddenly, out of sheer impulse, Adam turned to her and put a steady hand on her shoulder. She looked more startled than before, and he was sure he seemed rather startled at his own actions. He thought he was trying to offer comfort, which, however, he felt like he was more in need of. Faye seemed to understand his intent, and offered him a small smile. A real one this time.
Adam smiled back, and felt something he hadn't felt in a long while. Hope.
