Bittersweet

"Diana, what's wrong?" Adam caught her in the hallway between 7th and 8th period. "You've been avoiding me all day."

She turned around to look at him, and he was surprised when he saw her eyes shining with tears. "I've tried to ignore it, I've tried to be OK with it. But I just can't do it anymore." she said. He didn't understand what she was going on about.

"What are you talking about?" he asked, taking her hands gently in his own. "I don't understand."

"Like hell you don't!" she snapped, and he flinched. Never before had he heard her swear. This was serious. A tear slid down her face. "Look me in the eyes and tell me that you don't feel something for her, Adam." She whispered.

That was when he understood. "What does Cassie have to do with this?"

"Just answer the damn question!" She sounded hurt. "I'm sick of you dodging my questions. Are you in love with her?" Her voice broke.

"I don't know." he told her honestly. She looked away, and he pushed her chin up. "What I do know, however, is that I love you. That won't ever change." He looked hopefully at her.

She forcefully pulled her chin away and looked down at her feet and then back up into his eyes. "Well, that's not good enough for me. I hate to play the jealous girlfriend card, but I'm giving you a choice. Either stay with me, or go with her. But if you go with her, then I guarantee that things will change between us." Diana's tone was calm, and yet utterly sad at the same time.

His heart dropped into his stomach. She was making him choose? This was not good. How could he choose between his girlfriend, whom he loved deeply or Cassie, whom he felt a deep emotional connection with? "Diana, I choose you." As soon as the words left his mouth, he realized just how true it was. "Diana, I've loved you since junior high, and I probably always will love you. So I choose you." He kissed her, not caring that they were in the middle of the hallway. He could taste her tears on his lips and he wiped them away as they kissed. He didn't know how long he could fight his attraction to Cassie, but he was sure as hell going to try. Diana's happiness came before his own. He wouldn't hesitate to make sure that was how it always was, even if that meant his happiness taking a backseat. He hated seeing her upset, and he never wanted to see that side of her again.
