I wrote this fic in September 2005 and I think it was the second fic I wrote. As ever, with my old fics, I've taken the decision to leave it as it was when I first wrote it. But please bear in mind when you read that it was written 6 years ago.
Thank you for reading!
The Past Matters
Jill sat next to Gordon, holding his limp hand. She watched people come and go as if through a thick fog. She heard their distant voices and only heard snippets of what they said. Matron, Lizzie, Jeff, Meryl, Sister Brigid, Mr Rose, Ken. Everyone came. They all said basically the same things to Gordon. "Wake up, we need you." and to her a "sorry" or a vague word of comfort.
At last, when everyone had been and gone, Jill was alone with Gordon. She focused on his face, on all his injuries. She knew it was a miracle he was still alive. She couldn't carry on if he passed. They were meant to be together.
Jill pressed his hand to her chest. She had so much to say to him but at the same time, she didn't know what to say. She decided to start with what was at the forefront of her mind and carry on from there.
"I love you Gordon. So, so much... and I'm so sorry about everything. Please wake up. Be alright again. I need you Gordon. Please." Jill's emotions overwhelmed her and she finally allowed herself to cry. Eventually, exhausted, she lay her head on the bed next to Gordon and fell to sleep.
Jill drifted between sleep and awakeness. She imagined feeling someone stroking her hair like a parent might stroke a child's hair to comfort it or lull it to sleep.
Rousing herself through the mist, she still felt a hand in her hair. She opened her eye and blinked a few times. Fortunatly the room was dull so her eyes adjusted to the light quickly.
Jill lifted up her head and gasped. Gordon was gazing lovingly at her, a soft smile playing on his lips.
"Oh Gordon," Jill cried. "I'm so sorry. I love you so much and I..."
"Shhh, Jill." Gordon interupted softly. "It's okay, everything is going to be alright. I love you and you love me, that's all that matters."
They shared a look of such love. The love that can only be described as pure, true love.
After a moment Gordon spoke "You were crying in your sleep."
Jill moved up onto the bed, lay her head next to Gordon's and placed her hand on his chest. "I know." She whispered.
Gordon wrapped his arm around her sholders and they lay together, content and sharing the love they felt for each other.
The End
