Astronomy Tower
"Lily?" James' voice asked curiously. His voice barely audible over the sound of worn boots on old castle stairs.
"Piss off, Mary."
"I'm not Mary; it's James." James' voice quietly answered as he slid down next to Lily on the far corner wall.
"Okay; piss off James."
"I didn't mean for you to hate me the instant I come up here."
"You've always known I hated you; why shouldn't I hate you now?" Lily's words abruptly ended with a choke as James noticed Lily's cheeks were wet with tears.
"Because something is wrong. And you currently hate Mary because she is dating the boyfriend that just cheated on you and Alice is too caught up with Frank, so that why you feel alone and depressed; that's why I came up here."
"I didn't think anyone would notice me missing. And you know I'm not going to talk to you; why bother?"
"One, because I've been sneaking around this castle for years, and two, you need someone to talk to about… something or someone important in your life is gone? Or at least I'm guessing that." James's voice breaking a little when he remembered old friends and family that had left.
"That's an awful good guess for a boy who doesn't 'stalk'."Lily's sarcastic voice retorted. A few lone tears dripped off Lily's face onto her ragged pajama shirt.
"So, I guessed closely, right?"
"Yeah, I guess you made it really close. It's my friend. She's dead." Lily broke out into a series of screeching sobs; leaning on James for support.
James slowly moved his hand onto Lily's hand.
"I said PISS OFF James!"
The hand moved away like an ant around boiling water. The hurt in James' eyes carefully looked at Lily with a confused, pained expression; as if he couldn't figure out whether or not Lily wanted him there.
"Lily. I know what you're going through."
"Fuck you, Potter."
James continued as though nothing had happened. "Lily, by best friend EVER-and I mean ever- Ian, died when I was twelve."
"Oh, James. I'm so sorry." Her faced morphed into a deeper more resigned look.
James turned to her with tears in his eyes. "That was a long time ago, Lily. Forget I said anything."
"Kiss me, James. I mean really kiss me." Lily turned to him; a look of need, of want.
And yet James had waited his whole life for this moment, and he didn't want it. Not like this. He wanted it to be true. Not just to hide the pain.
"Lily, no."
She tried to grab his shirt; he simply pulled away.
"Not here, Lily. Not now. Not with you drunk and in pain."
"But-"
"Later, Lily. Now isn't the time. We better get you off to bed."
