Lizzie's heart tries to separate a man from his self-propagating myth.
When he was notorious, I could revel in exaggerated tellings of his daring adventures and cleverest deeds.
When he was notorious, I could let my child's fascination for his wondrous pirate's life know no boundaries beyond books.
When he was notorious, I could allow such infatuated dreams of glorifying in his dark beauty and rakish, gold-filled smile.
When he was notorious, I could not see his cruel scars or the wrenching look of loss in the wake of abandoning his doomed ship.
When he was notorious, I could not know how a kiss of selfish betrayal would chance to break such an untouchable spirit.
