Tent – Jack's Last Thoughts:

Rated T

Characters of Annie Proulx and the film of BBM.

We had two tents:

One on the allotment where the Forest Service said it wus OK.

One with the sheep that smelt a cat's piss or worse.

But the tent on the allotment was best…the main tent…our tent.

Old Ennis had tried his best with that tent…fiddled with it till ah said, 'Let it be, it ain't goin nowhere.'

But it did, it sheltered us when we first loved…..remember it as though it wus yesterday.

Storm a brewin, ma darlin wanted ta go up ta the sheep – how could ah let him – lightnin had killed all those sheep one time before, maybe he'd get struck or blowed off the mountain…..in the end, he stayed with me – we made sweet love.

That last mornin of '63 together on Brokeback old Joe Aguirre been up told me a storm wus brewin. I started pullin that tent down, packin up. Ennis rode in - ah knew he would be cold, hungry and not just for food, poor darlin - no comfort for him that mornin – guess that's why ya lost ya temper – ah know'd ya didn't want ta go.

Four years ah missed ya – that old tent ah'd rode off with (Ageerie never claimed it) came in useful a few more times – then there wus new times and a new tent.

But, y'know, lyin here alone now, the men have gone, ah wish ah wus in that old tent an a wish ah wus with you……. ma darlin, darlin Ennis.
